Song:You Give Love A Bad Name
Album:Greatest Hits: The Ultimate Collection
You Give Love A Bad Name was Bon Jovi's first number one hit in 1986. It set them up to become one of the most popular bands of the 80s. And they are still around. They are from Sayreville, NJ. Jon Bon Jovi had several bands in the late 70s. He sent out some demos including one produced by Billy Squier but he got no response. He got a break when he recorded some jingles for radio station WAPP. And they convinced him to put one of his songs on a comp album of local talent. When the song got local airplay, Bon Jovi called his pianist buddy David Bryan to form a band. The other members were Alec John Such on bass and drummer Tico Torres. Dave Sabo played lead guitar at first. But he left to join Skid Row. Such and Torres recommended Richie Sambora and he joined the band. They signed with Mercury Records in 1984. The name Bon Jovi was suggested because of Van Halen. Their first two albums did OK but not great. Runaway reached the top 40. But the 1986 album Slippery When Wet broke through in a big way. The album was produced by Bruce Fairbairn at his studio in Vancouver. Usually Bon Jovi and Sambora wrote all the band songs. But for this album they brought in the very successful songwriter Desmond Child who is now in the Songwriters Hall Of Fame. And he co-wrote three songs including You Give Love A Bad Name. Basically, Child gave the song a hook and new lyrics. That song topped the charts and Slippery When Wet was certified Diamond. The next single Livin' On A Prayer also topped the charts and that is Bon Jovi's signature song. Bon Jovi continued to have success until they went on hiatus in 1997. And success continued when they returned in 1999. You can get all their hits on this comp. Such left Bon Jovi in 1994 replaced by Hugh McDonald. Sambora left in 2013 replaced by Phil X. Bon Jovi's latest CD was released in 2016. They aren't on tour right now so they could be working on new music. This year Bon Jovi was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame. Here's the video for You Give Love A Bad Name by Bon Jovi.
