Jerry Douglas is known as the greatest steel guitar player of all time. This is commonly known as a dobro. Douglas has played on sessions since the 70s, recorded his own albums and leads several bands. He was born May 28, 1956 in Warren, OH. His father was a bluegrass musician and Douglas played in his dad's band as a teen. Douglas was heavily influenced by Flatt & Scruggs Foggy Mountain Boys steel guitarist Josh Graves. He toured with The Country Gentlemen. Douglas became a session musician in the 70s working with JD Crowe, David Grisman, Ricky Skaggs, and Tony Rice among others. He signed with Rounder Records and Randy Lynn Rag is from his 1979 album Fluxology. Randy Lynn Rag is a Flatt & Scruggs standard written by Earl Scruggs. Musicians include Ricky Skaggs on fiddle and mandolin, JD Crowe on banjo, Wes Golding on guitar and Bobby Slone on bass. Douglas recorded two albums on Rounder and then left for MCA in 1986. Through this he remained an in demand session musician. Rounder reissued both albums in 1987 on Everything Is Gonna Workout Fine. In the 90s, Douglas recorded for Sugar Hill and also worked there as a producer. He recorded for Koch (now E1) and he returned to Rounder for his 2017 album What If. Douglas is a member of Alison Krauss and Union Station, The Steep Canyon Rangers and he is music director of the BBC series Transatlantic Sessions. Currently he tours with The Jerry Douglas Band and The Earls Of Leicester. The Earls Of Leicester is a Flatt & Scruggs tribute band. They have recorded two albums for Rounder. Members are Shawn Camp on vocals and guitar, Charlie Cushman on banjo, Johnny Warren on fiddle and Barry Bales on bass. Tim O'Brien was the original mandolin player who is in this video. He left the band and Jeff White is one of several mandolinists who take turns touring with them. The Jerry Douglas Band is currently on tour and The Earls Of Leicester will tour in August.
