Artist:The Only Ones
Song:Another Girl, Another Planet
Album:The Only Ones
The Only Ones were a pioneering punk band that probably deserved to be more successful than they were. Another Girl, Another Planet was their most popular song. They were probably New Wave before there was such a term. The Only Ones were formed in London in 1976 by lead singer and songwriter Peter Perrett. The other members were John Perry on guitar, ex-Spooky Tooth drummer Mike Kellie and former Beaststalkers bassist Alan Mair. They released a single independently and that got them a deal with CBS Records. Another Girl, Another Planet was the next single. And though the song wasn't a hit, it did well enough that they recorded an album. It did well enough that they got to record a second album. It also got the attention of Columbia in the US and The Only Ones were brought over to the US to open for The Who. Columbia released the 1979 album Special View which was a mix of the two albums. That is available on CD but it's too expensive so I recommend the original 1978 album The Only Ones. Today The Only Ones are considered to be New Wave pioneers and very influential. The Replacements and Blur are among the bands that have named The Only Ones as an influence. But they split up after releasing three commercially unsuccessful albums. That happened during the US tour apparently due to drug abuse. Perrett has a history of heroin use. After Another Girl, Another Planet was used in a 2006 Vodafone commercial, The Only Ones reformed to tour. They also appeared on Later...with Jools Holland. They have not recorded new music but they did release live CDs and DVDs. The Only Ones last toured England in 2015 and they may have split up. Here's The Only Ones performing Another Girl, Another Planet on French TV 1979.
