Song:Beware Of Doug
Album:Time Travel
Dave Douglas is one of today's top jazz trumpeters. He has been around the New York jazz scene since the late 80s and has been recording as a leader since 1993. He has recorded for his own label Greenleaf Music for the last 15 years. He was born Mar. 24, 1963 in East Orange, NJ. He took piano lessons as a child and took up the trumpet at age 9. Douglas got into jazz and improvising during high school while on a student exchange program in Spain. He studied at Berklee, the New England Conservatory and New York University and he earned a degree in music. His first big professional gig was a 1987 European tour with legendary pianist Horace Silver. Douglas has had a long history with John Zorn's group Masada. He joined that group in the early 90s and he's still a member today. Douglas made his recording debut as a leader in 1993. He has recorded for all kinds of labels including Soul Note and DIW. But his most significant run was with RCA from 2000-2004. Since then Douglas started his own label Greenleaf music. He also joined the SF Jazz Collective in 2008 and he still tours and records with them. Beware Of Doug is from the 2013 album Time Travel. He is working with young musicians that he has recorded with frequently in recent years. On tenor sax is Jon Irabagon from Chicago. He has recorded as a leader and plays with several Chicago based bands. Pianist Matt Michell is from Philadelphia. He also records with Matt Berne and Darius Jones. Bassist Linda Oh is from Australia. She works frequently with Irabagon and she has recorded a couple of albums for Greenleaf. Drummer Rudy Royston is from Texas. He also works with trumpeter Ron Miles. This album is available as a budget CD. Douglas' latest CD Dada People was released in 2016. He doesn't seem to be on tour right now. But I'm sure you can find him in New York clubs. Here's Dave Douglas with Jon Irabagon, Matt Mitchell, Linda Oh and Rudy Royston performing Beware Of Doug in the recording studio 2013.
