Song:My Pledge Of Love
Album:Hard To Find 45s On CD Vol. 13: The Love Album
My Pledge Of Love was a top 20 hit in 1969. It was the only chart hit for Joe Jeffrey Group. They recorded an album and released a few singles but they were unable to follow it up. Joe Jeffrey was born Joe Stafford Jr. in Arkansas but he grew up in Cleveland. He changed his name to Joe Jeffrey to avoid being confused with pop singer Jo Stafford. He played local clubs and got the attention of Buffalo based record distributor Jerry Meyers. Meyers got Jeffrey a deal with Scepter's Wand label and British producer Alan Klein. Not to be confused with ABKCO owner Alan Klein, this Alan Klein turned to production and songwriting after an unsuccessful mid-60s recording career. It looks like he moved to New York in the late 60s. Jeffrey wrote My Pledge Of Love and it reached #14 on the Billboard Hot 100. An album was released and subsequent singles didn't chart. He had a little bad luck when he released My Baby Loves Lovin' the same time as White Plains and radio stations preferred the White Plains version and that was the hit recording. Jeffrey went to Memphis to record with producer Chips Moman but nothing came of it. Jeffrey returned to playing Cleveland clubs. You can get My Pledge Of Love on this various artists CD from Eric Records. Here's a video for My Pledge Of Love by Joe Jeffrey Group.
