Song:Rub You The Right Way
Album:Ultimate Collection
The 1990 hit Rub You The Right Way was the biggest hit for former New Edition member Johnny Gill. He first had chart success as a teen. He was born May 22, 1966 in Washington, DC. His father was a minister and as a child, he sang in the family gospel group Wings Of Faith. As a teen, he was friends with singer Stacy Lattisaw who already had success on the R & B charts. She had him record a demo and took it to her label Cotillion Records. He signed and released his debut album Johnny Gill in 1983. The album was produced by veteran producer Freddie Perren. Gill had his biggest hit with the 1984 duet with Lattisaw Perfect Combination. After three albums on Cotillion, Gill joined New Edition and we all know how successful they were. Gill was brought in to replace Ralph Tresvant. As New Edition fell apart in the late 80s, Gill signed with Motown and recorded his 1990 CD with two high powered production teams, LA Reid and Babyface and Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Rub You The Right Way was the first single and it topped the R & B Singles chart and reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100. Because Gill was known mostly for ballads, Jam and Lewis wanted to show that he could rock an uptempo song. It turned out to be his biggest hit. My, My, My was Gill's other top ten pop hit. He continued to have success on the R & B charts until he faded in the mid 90s. You can get all his hits including Perfect Combination on this budget comp. New Edition reunited in 1996. And then Gill formed LSG with Gerald Levert and Keith Sweat and their 1997 CD was very successful. Gill has also done acting mostly in gospel plays. Gill wouldn't record another solo CD until 2011. Currently he is touring with the group Heads Of State with Bobby Brown and Ralph Tresvant. They haven't recorded but I guess they are a nostalgia act at this point.
