Song:Sunglasses At Night
Album:The Best Of Corey Hart
Canadian singer songwriter Corey Hart seemingly came out of nowhere to have a pretty good run in the 80s with hits like Sunglasses At Night and Never Surrender. Today he's a frequent subject of Whatever Happened To? though he is working on new music. He was born May 31, 1962 in Montreal. His family moved around a lot but when his parents separated, he moved back to Montreal with his mom. After recording demos with Billy Joel's band in Long Island, Hart signed with Aquarius Records in Canada and EMI in the US in 1982. His 1983 debut album First Offense was produced by British producer Jon Astley. He worked with The Who in the 70s. The album was recorded in England with studio musicians. After the album was finished, Hart wrote Sunglasses At Night and insisted that it be added to the album. He thought it would be a big hit. That turned out to be a great move as Sunglasses At Night was the first single and it reached #7 on the Billboard Hot 100. What's interesting about Hart is he didn't become popular in Canada until after he broke in the US. I think the music video was a big factor. Hart was getting mobbed by female fans. Never Surrender from his 1985 album Boy in the Box reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100. Though Hart never had another top ten hit, he continued to have decent success through the 80s. You can get all his hits on this budget CD. Hart faded in the early 90s and left Capitol for Sire Records and later Columbia. He met his future wife French Canadian singer Julie Masse at the 1993 Juno Awards and they started working together. He produced her album. After recording two albums for Columbia, he sort of retired and moved to The Bahamas with Julie and their four kids. Hart started his own label Siena and produced the 2011 debut CD by French Canadian singer Marie-Christine Depestre. Now Hart is back recording his own music. He released the EP Ten Thousand Horses on iTunes in April with a full length CD on the way. I wonder if he still wears sunglasses at night. Here's the video for Sunglasses At Night by Corey Hart.
