Lay a Little Lovin' on Me was a top 20 hit in 1970. It was the only big hit for singer songwriter Robin McNamara. Though he is perceived as a one hit wonder, one of his other singles charted so technically he is not a one hit wonder. He was born May 5, 1947 in Newton, MA. He led a band called Robin and the Hoods while in high school. McNamara starred as Claude in the original Broadway cast of Hair. And that's where he was spotted by legendary Brill Building songwriter and producer Jeff Barry. He started his own label Steed Records with Dot Records distribution. The other big artist on Steed was Andy Kim. Barry produced the 1970 album Lay a Little Lovin' on Me and the title track reached #11 on the Billboard Hot 100. Barry wrote the song with McNamara and his frequent songwriting partner Jim Cretecos. At least McNamara still gets royalty cheques. He wrote several of the songs on the album and so did Brill Building veteran Neil Goldberg. A second single Got to Believe in Love (written by Goldberg) charted but was not a hit.
