Brianna Van Buren is the new Invicta Strawweight Champion

The Invicta one night tournament aired last night on UFC Fight Pass. The bottom line is the right fighter won the tournament though the flaws of one round fights were pretty obvious earlier in the show. And I understand the nostalgia for one night tournaments. But the nostalgia is misplaced because the restrictions placed by the athletic commission on this tournament reduced it to a pale imitation. One round fights tend to lead to fluke results. And that happened on this show. MIZUKI and Janaisa Morandin had weight cut problems and were replaced. MIZUKI has had enough problems cutting weight that maybe it's time she moved up to Flyweight. The show started with the four first round matches. The first fight was Kailin Curran vs Sunna Davidsdottir. This was Kailin's first Invicta appearance after a dismal UFC stint. I guess that qualifies her for an Invicta title tournament. The one round fights probably benefitted her the most because there wasn't enough time for her to lose concentration and shoot herself in the foot. Sunna is from Iceland. We've seen her before in Invicta. She's not a finisher which probably cost her this fight. Kailin scored two knockdowns and Sunna was in top position through the middle of the round. I scored it for Sunna but it did not surprise me that Kailin won by split decision. I wonder if any of the judges flipped a coin. The second fight was Juliana Lima vs Danielle Taylor. Both are awful former UFC fighters. Juliana used her height advantage to press Danielle against the fence and win by split decision. I said afterwards that Juliana won by standing lay and pray. Next was Brianna Van Buren vs Manjit Koekar who replaced Janaisa Morandin. Brianna is from Gilroy, CA. She was nothing special in her previous Invicta fight. Manjit is from India but she now trains at Syndicate in Las Vegas. Roxanne Modafferi was in her corner. Brianna dominated and won with an armbar. This meant she got to choose her opponent in the semi finals. The fourth fight was Sharon Jacobson vs Amber Brown who replaced MIZUKI. Amber is an Atomweight who tends to be overmatched at Strawweight. Sharon won by unanimous decision. Brianna chose Juliana as her semi final opponent. First there was a reserve fight. Alyssa Krahn beat Itzel Esquivel by unanimous decision. In the first semi final, Brianna beat Juliana by unanimous decision. And in the other, Kailin beat Sharon by unanimous decision. While waiting for the final, Magdalena Sormova from the Czech Republic beat Kay Hansen by split decision. I thought Kay started out OK but lost steam in the other two rounds. The final was three rounds. Brianna dominated round one but it wasn't quite a 10-8. She continued to dominate in round two and she won with a rear naked choke. At least the right fighter won. Brianna was the best fighter on this show. But I still don't like one round fights.
