AccuRadio Song Of the Day-The Bothy Band

Artist:The Bothy Band
Song:Casadh an tSugain
Album:The Best of The Bothy Band

Though they were only around for four years and they recorded three studio albums, The Bothy Band are considered to be very influential on the Irish music scene. Bouzouki player Donal Lunny formed The Bothy Band in 1975 after he left Planxty and started his own record label Mulligan. He invited some friends to a recording session and The Bothy Band came from that. The musicians were Paddy Keenan on pipes, Matt Molloy on flute, Paddy Glackin on fiddle and Tony MacMahon on accordion. They were joined by Micheal O Domnhaill on vocals and guitar and his sister Triona Ni Domnhaill on clavinet from the group Skara Brae. At first the group was called Seachtar but after MacMahon left to work for the BBC, Micheal renamed the group The Bothy Band. As I said, they only recorded three studio albums plus a live album. But the albums were very successful especially in Ireland. Glackin left prior to the first album and was replaced by Kevin Burke. Casadh an tSugain is from the 1979 album After Hours: Live In Paris. This was their farewell album. Micheal O Domnhaill sings lead. This is a traditional Gaelic love song that was also recorded by The Chieftains. This song was performed in the film Brooklyn which generated some interest. This comp covers all four Bothy Band albums. After the group disbanded in 1979, Lunny returned to Planxty and then formed Moving Hearts in 1982. Micheal O Domnhaill and Kevin Burke performed and recorded as a duo. They moved to Portland, OR in 1980. Michael later formed the group Nightnoise and then he died in 2006. Here's Micheal O Domnhaill with Kevin Burke and guitarist Gerry O'Bierne performing Casadh an tSugain 1979.
