AccuRadio Song Of The Day-The Romantics

Artist:The Romantics
Song:Talking In Your Sleep
Album:Super Hits

Talking In Your Sleep was the biggest hit for the 80s power pop group The Romantics. They had some other chart hits and are probably memorable because of their matching bouffant hairdos. They formed in Detroit in 1977 and were called The Romantics because they formed on Valentines Day. The members were lead singer and rhythm guitarist Wally Palmar, lead guitarist Mike Skill, bassist Rich Cole and drummer Jimmy Marinos. Palmar and Skill were the main songwriters. Their music was influenced by British Invasion music along with some of the Detroit groups like MC5 and The Stooges. And of course punk and new wave was just getting big in the late 70s. Their debut album was released independently in 1979 and then they signed with Nemperor Records in 1980. Nemperor was owned by manager Nat Weiss and had distribution by Epic. They started out recording fusion music in 1974 and got more into pop later on. The Romantics' producer was one time Procol Harum member Pete Solley. Their first single What I Like About You only reached #49 on the Billboard Hot 100 but it would become popular when it was used in a late 80s Budweiser commercial. They also were known for their matching outfits and hairdos. That's a very 60s thing. Their second album National Breakout didn't do as well and Skill left and was replaced by Coz Canler. Skill returned when Cole left in 1982. The Romantics had their biggest success with the 1983 album In Heat which reached #14 on the Billboard Hot 200. Talking In Your Sleep reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100. They were successful but Marinos didn't like the band straying from power pop to a more electro pop style and he left and was replaced by David Petratos. Subsequent albums didn't do as well and The Romantics had faded by 1987. They also found that their management was stealing from them. They didn't even know that What I Like About You was used in a Bud ad. They sued successfully but weren't able to record until the lawsuit was settled in the mid-90s. You can get all their hits on this budget comp. The Romantics are still touring and they last recorded in 2003. Wally Palmar was on the 2010 Ringo Starr All Star Band tour. Here's the video for Talking In Your Sleep by The Romantics. I know you love the hair.
