Artist:Ornette Coleman
Song:Congeniality
Album:The Shape Of Jazz To Come
So we're starting off the new year with music that was revolutionary even for jazz. Bebop was just getting established when tenor sax player Ornette Coleman turned it upside down with this 1959 album The Shape Of Jazz To Come. Something different is always going to be controversial. But Coleman, trumpeter Don Cherry, bassist Charlie Haden and drummer Billy Higgins made several albums for Atlantic that hold up even better today. There was no piano in this music. I guess the thing about Ornette Coleman is he was always experimenting with the boundaries of jazz. He's not always successful but he's always interesting. Ornette Coleman still records and released Sound Grammar in Sept. 2006. Here's Ornette Coleman performing School Work on Italian TV 1974 with James "Blood" Ulmer on guitar, Sirone on bass and Billy Higgins on drums.
