Artist:Tori Kelly
Song:Coffee
Album:Inspired by True Events
On the surface, singer songwriter Tori Kelly should be a big star. But for some reason, her albums are not selling to a point that she decided to switch to a different record company and change her hair color. It remains to be seen if that helps. She was born Dec. 14, 1992 in Wildomar, CA. As a child, she appeared on Star Search but lost. After appearing on America's Most Talented Kid, 12 year old Tori signed with Geffen Records. But the two disagreed over creative direction so the contract was cancelled. Then she started posting videos on YouTube. Then she auditioned for the 2010 season of American Idol. When she didn't make the "Top 24", that should have told her that she is missing something. I have a theory which I will get to later. Tori signed with manager Scooter Braun and his label Schoolboy Records and he took her to Capitol Records. They released an EP in 2013 and she appeared on The Today Show. Tori went on tour and opened for Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith. Her 2015 debut album Unbreakable Smile had various producers including Tori herself. Max Martin produced three tracks. Tori wrote all the songs with co-writers. Three singles from the album charted but they didn't chart high enough to be considered as hit singles. The album was certified Gold. Considering all the hype, that's disappointing. Tori's 2018 album Hiding Place was produced by Kirk Franklin. So it did well in the CCM market and won a couple of Grammys. But it didn't do any better. Coffee is from the 2019 album Inspired by True Events. This was mostly produced by Jimmy Napes who produces Sam Smith. Tori wrote most of the songs with him. It did worse than the previous albums. Tori released a Christmas album in 2020 which finished her contract with Capitol. She announced she signed with Epic in 2023 and released the 2025 album Tori. Did she make any changes? Well, she's not a blonde anymore. But she's back to writing and producing herself which is what did in her early days. Her songs don't seem to appeal to people so doubling down is not the answer. I think she should turn over writing and producing to others and see if that helps. The other solution is go all in on CCM and work with Kirk Franklin again. She could be big in that market. Tori says she is a Christian. Maybe she should have done CCM in the first place. Here's Tori Kelly performing Coffee in Capitol Studios 2019.
