Artist:Edie Brickell & New Bohemians
Song:What I Am
Album:Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars
The 1988 single What I Am was a top ten hit. It was the only big hit for Edie Brickell & New Bohemians. One of her other songs charted so she is not a one hit wonder. She was born Mar. 10, 1966 in Dallas. Edie attended Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts followed by Southern Methodist University. New Bohemians was formed in 1982 as a trio and it expanded in 1985. Edie was urged to join the band onstage. It went so well that a local agent started booking them in clubs. Other members were Kenny Withrow on guitar, Brad Houser on bass, Brandon Aly on drums and John Walter Bush on percussion. New Bohemians became a local favorite and they signed with Geffen Records. Their debut album Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars was released in 1988. They were billed as Edie Brickell & New Bohemians. I'm sure Geffen changed the name. What I Am was the first single and it reached #7 on the Billboard Hot 100. MTV put the video in heavy rotation which is the main reason the song was a hit. Edie and Withrow wrote most of the songs including What I Am. The album was recorded in Wales by producer Pat Moran who had worked with Robert Plant. And Plant's guitarist Robbie Blunt played the guitar solo on What I Am. The album was certified 2XPlatinum. It's available as a budget CD. The 1990 album Ghost of a Dog didn't do as well. The only change was the album was produced by Geffen A&R exec Tony Berg. Maybe Geffen didn't want to send the band to Wales again. New Bohemians split up shortly after that. Today What I Am is viewed as a one hit wonder. Not long after that Edie married Paul Simon and they are still married. Edie released a solo album in 1994. New Bohemians reformed and released an album in 2006. Edie is lead singer of The Gaddabouts led by drummer Steve Gadd. They recorded two albums. And she has performed with banjoist Steve Martin and his band Steep Canyon Rangers. Most recently she has recorded two albums with the band Heavy MakeUp. Here's the video for What I Am by Edie Brickell & New Bohemians.
