Artist:Christian Howes
Song:Bobby's Bad

There aren't many jazz violinists around these days. So Christian Howes may be of interest to jazz violin fans. He was born Feb. 21, 1972 in Rocky River, OH which is a suburb of Cleveland. He started taking violin lessons at age five. As a teen, he competed in violin competitions and he got interested in jazz. But at age 19, he was convicted of a drug charge and sentenced to four years in prison. He continued to study jazz while in prison. And upon his release, Howes self released his first two albums. He got work as a sideman playing on albums by Greg Osby, Spyro Gyra and he joined guitarist Joel Harrison's band. This got him a record deal with the jazz label Resonance Records. The 2010 album Out of the Blue is the second of his three albums for Resonance. Special guest on this album is guitarist Robben Ford. Other musicians are Tamir Hendelman on piano, Bobby Floyd on organ (he is also from Ohio), Kevin Axt on bass and Joel Rosenblatt on drums. Howes wrote a lot of the songs including Bobby's Bad. Howes last released an album in 2015. He is still in Harrison's band. But he is an associate professor at Berklee College of Music. And he runs instructional workshops from his home in Columbus, OH. Here's Christian Howes with Robben Ford on guitar, Bobby Floyd on organ, Tamir Hendelman on piano, Ric Fierabracci on bass and Joel Rosenblat on drums performing Bobby's Bad at Spazio's in Sherman Oaks, CA Jan. 30, 2010.
