AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Supergrass

Artist:Supergrass

Song:Alright

Album:Supergrass Is 10

Supergrass had success mostly in their native England. Attempts to break through in the US didn't pan out. The 1995 single Alright was their biggest hit and signature song. Maybe you heard it on the soundtrack of the 1995 film Clueless. Supergrass is from Oxford, England. Lead singer Gaz Coombes and drummer Danny Goffey were classmates and were in the band The Jennifers with Danny's brother Nick Goffey. The Goffeys are sons of motoring journalist and former BBC Top Gear host Chris Goffey. The Jennifers were playing locally and recording demos looking for a record deal. After releasing a single and having a second single rejected by their label, The Jennifers split up in the fall of 1992. While working at a local restaurant, Coombes befriended co-worker Mick Quinn and asked if he wanted to jam. At first the band was called Theodore Supergrass and then shortened to Supergrass. Then Gaz Coombes brother Rod Coombes joined to play keyboards. After releasing a single and appearing on John Peel's BBC radio show, Supergrass signed with EMI's Parlophone label. Their debut album I Should Coco was released in 1995. The album was produced by Sam Williams of The Mystics. Supergrass was his first production gig. Alright was the fifth single and it reached #2 on the British Singles chart. The album was certified Platinum in England. Alright appeared on the soundtrack of the 1995 film Clueless. Supposedly Steven Spielberg wanted Supergrass to star in a proposed TV series. Though Supergrass continued to have success in England, they were never able to break through in the US. You can get all their hits on this budget comp. After Parlophone was sold in 2008, Supergrass left and started their own label with BMG distribution. Supergrass split up in 2010. They have reunited a couple of times but the guys are working on their own music. So it appears that the split is permanent. Here's the video for Alright by Supergrass.
