AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Angie & Debbie

Artist:Angie & Debbie

Song:Light of Love

Album:Angie & Debbie

Angie & Debbie Winans are the youngest of the ten Winans siblings. Like the rest of the family, they write songs and sing. They had modest success on the R&B charts with the 1993 album Angie & Debbie and the single Light of Love. They won a Soul Train award for Best New Artist. It was their only album for a major label. And after one more album, they kind of disappeared. Angie Winans was born in 1968 and Debbie was born in 1970 in Detroit. The whole family is in Gospel music. Angie & Debbie started out touring and singing backup vocals for Bebe & Cece Winans. Bebe decided it was time for Angie & Debbie to go out on their own. He got them a deal with Capitol Records. The catch was Capitol wanted an R&B album. Bebe was executive producer so it was his responsibility to give Capitol what they wanted. He wrote, produced and arranged a lot of the album. The single Light of Love did well enough in the R&B market that Angie & Debbie won a 1994 Soul Train award for Best New Artist. The song was written and produced by Gary Brown and Steve Harvey who usually work together on R&B albums. You will notice that Whitney Houston makes a guest appearance in the video. She sang backup vocals on the record and Angie & Debbie opened for her on tour. This album is available as a budget CD. This was Angie & Debbie's only album for Capitol. In a 1997 interview with Gospel Flava, Angie & Debbie said they wanted to return to Gospel. So they left Capitol and started their own label for the 1997 album Bold. Angie & Debbie wrote and produced the album with Angie's husband Cedric Caldwell and his brother Victor Caldwell. There was a backlash because the song Not Natural reflected Angie & Debbie's views about homosexuality. This was their final album as a duo. Angie released a solo album in 2001. And since them they have raised families and occasionally sang backup on Winans family projects. Here's the video for Light of Love by Angie & Debbie. I'm glad they can sing because they sure can't play basketball.
