AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Regina

Artist:Regina

Song:Baby Love

Album:Curiosity

Baby Love was a top ten hit in 1986. Raise your hand if you think it's by Madonna. I'm sure plenty of folks did. But it's actually the only chart single by Regina Richards. So she is a one hit wonder. Soundalike hits are more common than you think. Regina is from Brooklyn, NY and she majored in theater at Marymount Manhattan College. In the late 70s she formed the New Wave band Regina Richards and Red Hot and played clubs like CBGB and Max's Kansas City. They got the attention of veteran producer Richard Gottehrer and he got them a deal with A&M Records. They released a 1981 album. Gottehrer produced and Regina wrote most of the songs. When the album went nowhere, Regina ended the band and decided she was going to concentrate on songwriting and studio work. The band's drummer Stephen Bray worked with her. Meanwhile Madonna was trying to get a record deal and asked Regina to help her with her demos. Bray went on to work with Madonna on Like a Virgin. So Regina figured now that Madonna is a big star maybe she will record some of her songs. And Regina and Bray wrote Baby Love for Madonna. Instead Regina's label, Atlantic Records, asked her to record it herself. Regina's recording of Baby Love reached #10 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album Curiosity followed. Baby Love was produced by Bray. The sax solo is by David Sanborn. The rest of the album was produced by B.T. Express drummer Leslie Ming. The album is available as a digital download. The album was unsuccessful mainly because of the perception that Regina is a Madonna wannabe. Other than Dannii Minogue's 1991 recording of Baby Love charting in England and Australia, Regina hasn't recorded since Baby Love. So maybe recording it wasn't such a good idea in the first place. Here's the single for Baby Love by Regina.

  1. Nice song, really sounds like an 80's song. As well as the video. I now recall hearing that one on the radio and thinking it was sung by Madonna. So I am one of those people who say yes and raise his hand Frank. To bad she had only one hit. She has a great voice and definitely has talent. It would have been nice to have heard more from her. Thanks Frank that was interesting. David.
