AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Marisa Monte

Artist:Marisa Monte

Song:Eu Sei

Album:Mais

Brazilian singer songwriter Marisa Monte has been successful since the early 90s. In the 80s she moved to Italy to be an opera singer but was convinced to record her own music. She was born July 1, 1967 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She started singing and playing piano as a child and began to study opera at age 14. After taking the entrance exam for Escola Nacional de Musica, she decided to move to Rome at age 18 to study opera in depth. It was there that she met veteran producer Nelson Motta. He had worked with Elis Regina among others. He convinced Marisa that she could be a successful pop singer in Brazil. He got her a deal with EMI. She has recorded for them for most of her career. Mais was her second album in 1991. The album was produced by Arto Lindsay, an American who has worked with Brazilians like Caetano Veloso. The album was recorded in New York and Brazil. The musicians on the New York tracks include John Zorn and Marty Ehrlich on sax, Marc Ribot on guitar, Bernie Worrell of Parliament/Funkadelic on keyboards, Melvin Gibbs on bass and Dougie Bowne on drums. Gibbs and Bowne worked with Lindsay. Eu Sei was recorded in Brazil featuring Japanese keyboard whiz Ryuichi Sakamoto, Lindsay and session musicians Perinho Santana and Robertinho do Recife on guitar, Ricardo Feijao on bass, Gigante Brazil on drums and Armando Marcal on percussion. When this album was successful, Marisa continued to work with Lindsay. Mais is available as a budget CD. Marisa moved to Sony a couple of years ago and her latest album Portas was released in 2021. She is self producing these days. Here's Marisa Monte performing Eu Sei 2005.
