AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Roy Haynes

Artist:Roy Haynes

Song:After Hours

Album:The Classic Albums Collection 1954-1964

Drummer Roy Haynes is one of the all time jazz greats mostly as a sideman since the 40s. He has recorded as a leader since 1954. And the great thing is he's still around playing New York clubs at 96 years old with musicians who could be his grandsons. Plus his real grandson Marcus Gilmore is one of today's top drummers. He was born Mar. 13, 1925 in the Roxbury section of Boston. His brother Michael E. Haynes was a pastor, politician and civil rights leader working closely with Dr. Martin Luther King. Haynes started out in 1944 with Luis Russell, Lester Young and Charlie Parker. He toured  with Sarah Vaughan from 1953-58. He recorded with Milt Jackson, Bud Powell, Stan Getz, Kai Winding, Wardell Gray and Miles Davis. Haynes made his recording debut as a leader with the 1954 album Busman's Holiday on Mercury's EmArcy label. That album is included in this box set. After Hours is from the 1959 album We Three for Prestige's New Jazz label. Haynes recorded for New Jazz from 1959-63. Musicians are Phineas Newborn Jr. on piano and Paul Chambers on bass. After Hours was written by pianist Avery Parrish for The Erskine Hawkins Orchestra. Dizzy Gillespie turned it into a jazz standard. There are three multi album Roy Haynes box sets. This one from the British label Enlightenment has 8 albums on 4 CDs. And it's cheaper and more wide ranging than the other two. Albums include the 1954 10" album Busman's Holiday. It was Haynes' debut as a leader.. The 1955 album Roy Haynes Modern Group was recorded in France for the French label Swing. The 1960 album Just Us was recorded for New Jazz with Richard Wyands on piano and Eddie De Haas on bass. Some Other Spring looks to be a retitled version of the 1962 Impulse album Out of the Afternoon with Roland Kirfk on sax, Tommy Flanagan on piano and Henry Grimes on bass. The 1963 McCoy Tyner album Reaching Fourth on Impulse. The 1963 album Cracklin' with Booker Ervin on sax, Ronnie Matthews on piano and Larry Ridley on bass. And the 1963 album Cymbalism with Frank Strozier on sax. After leaving New Jazz in 1963, Haynes wouldn't record as a leader again until the 70s. In the 60s, he recorded and toured with Stan Getz and Gary Burton. Haynes recorded for Fantasy's Galaxy label in the 70s. In the 80s he toured with Chick Corea and Pat Metheny. Since the 90s he has recorded mostly for Dreyfus Jazz. And he won a Grammy for the 1998 album Like Minds on Concord. Haynes last recorded as a leader in 2011. But he still plays New York clubs. And he appeared on Jon Batiste's score for the Oscar winning Pixar film Soul. How about that? Great movie if you haven't seen it on Disney+. Here's a video of Roy Haynes performing After Hours with Phineas Newborn Jr. and Paul Chambers.
