Joshua "Jawsh 685" Nanai is a remix guy who lucked into a worldwide chart topper when R&B singer Jason Derulo added vocals to one of his instrumentals. It was called Savage Love. Nanai was born Nov. 5, 2002 in Auckland, NZ. He is of Samoan and Cook Island descent. Jawsh 685 refers to Samoa's calling code. He started recording what in New Zealand is called "siren beats" in high school. They are instrumentals played in the street over speaker systems. It's similar to Reggaeton in Puerto Rico. Nanai posted Laxed to YouTube in 2019. When the song became a viral success, Nanai signed with Columbia Records. When there was buzz about adding a vocal to Laxed, R&B singer Jason Derulo used Laxed as the basis for Savage Love. This was unauthorized. Nanai was already in talks with several singers for a vocal version. Derulo decided to force the issue. At first Nanai resisted but Columbia stepped in and Nanai and Derulo worked out a deal to release Savage Love. It was a worldwide chart topper. Nanai was surprised by the success considering that he created the song in his bedroom after school. He was very pleased when Savage Love became a TikTok dance challenge. Since then Nanai has released a single from what is probably his debut album. He doesn't sing so I expect every song to have a guest singer.
