Norbert Leo Butz has won two Tony Awards including one for his performance as Carl Hanratty in the 2009 musical adaptation of the 2002 film Catch Me If You Can. He has done some films but he is mainly known for his work in Broadway musicals. He was born Jan. 30, 1967 in St. Louis. He is the seventh of eleven children. He first performed in high school and has a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Alabama. Butz moved to New York and replaced Adam Pascal in the 1996 production of Rent. He got a Tony Award nomination for the 2001 show Thou Shalt Not and he also appeared in the 2003 show Wicked. He won his first Tony for the 2005 show Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and then a second for Catch Me If You Can. Most folks should be familiar with the 2002 film Catch Me If You Can starring Leonardo Di Caprio and Tom Hanks and directed by Steven Speilberg. It's based on the real life pursuit of conman Frank Abagnale Jr. These days we see a lot of successful films turned into musicals. Marc Shaiman wrote this adaptation. This show had been in the works since 2005 and it premiered on Broadway Apr. 10, 2011. Aaron Tveit starred as Frank Abagnale Jr. Tom Wopat played Frank Abagnale Sr. Norbert Leo Butz played FBI agent Carl Hanratty. The show closed on Sept. 4, 2011. The biggest success of the show was Butz' Tony. He is currently appearing in the Chicago production of the musical Big Fish. This could make its way to Broadway in the future. Butz is married to actress Michelle Federer who he worked with in Wicked and they have a daughter.
