Tabloid headlines and death from suicide are the first things that come up when one thinks of country music singer Mindy McCready. But she had a number one country hit in 1996 with Guys Do It All The Time and looked to have a bright future. Bad relationships led her to drug abuse and then suicide. She was born Nov. 30, 1975 in Fort Myers, FL and grew up singing in church. At age 18, her mom agreed to let her move to Nashville to become a singer. If she didn't get a record contract in a year, Mindy would move back to Florida and go to college. One of her demos got the attention of producer David Malloy and he signed Mindy to BNA/RCA Records. Malloy's father Jim Malloy was a world renowned recording engineer. David Malloy established himself as a producer in the 70s working with Eddie Rabbit. Mindy's debut CD Ten Thousand Angels was released in 1996 and sold over two million copies. Ten Thousand Angels was the first single and reached #6 on the Country Singles chart. Her second single Guys Do It All The Time topped the Country Singles chart. The song was written by veteran songwriter Kim Tribble who has worked a lot with singer David Lee Murphy. It was co-written by Bobby Whiteside. Mindy's other top ten country hit was A Girl's Gotta Do (What A Girl's Gotta Do) in 1997. Her subsequent BNA albums didn't perform as well and she left for Capitol in 2002. You can get all her BNA hits on this Sony budget comp. Mindy's personal life became a story in 2005 when boyfriend Billy McKnight was arrested for attempting to murder her. Then she attempted suicide. The two got back together and Mindy got pregnant. She attempted suicide again. She was convicted of using a fake prescription to obtain oxycontin and was also arrested for DUI but was not guilty. She gave birth to her son in 2006. There were other suicide attempts and she was arrested for parole violations and assaulting her mother. And of course there was also her affair with baseball player Roger Clemens. Mindy recorded an album in 2009. She was living with record producer David Wilson and they had a son in 2012. After Wilson committed suicide on Jan. 13, 2013, Mindy shot herself and killed their dog on Feb. 17, 2013. The children are in foster care. Mindy McCready was dead at age 37. A sad end to a troubled life. It's too bad because she had talent. Here's the video for Guys Do It All The Time by Mindy McCready.
