Artist:Dwele
Song:Find a Way
Album:Dwele
Andwele "Dwele" Gardner is probably best known for appearing on a couple of Kanye West hits. He's had modest success as a solo artist. The 2003 single Find a Way is his biggest hit to date. He last released an album in 2012. Dwele is still around. But his brand of Neo Soul hasn't been marketable for a while. He was born Feb. 14, 1978 in Detroit. He started playing piano at age six. After his father was murdered outside his home when he was age ten, Dwele got deeper into music using it as therapy. Dwele's influences include Stevie Wonder, Roy Ayers and A Tribe Called Quest. He recorded a demo in his bedroom and sold it out of his car. It got the attention of producer J Dilla, leader of the hip hop group Slum Village. Dwele sang the hook on the 2002 Slum Village single Tainted. Then he appeared with Bahamadia and Lucy Pearl. Then Dwele signed with Virgin Records and released the 2003 album Subject. The single Find a Way reached #42 on the R&B Singles chart. The album did OK. Dwele wrote and produced the album. Find a Way was written and produced with George "G-One" Archie who has worked with DJ Quik. This album is available on CD. Virgin released the 2005 album Some Kinda.... Dwele wrote and produced again. Dwele left Virgin after that. Then he appeared on Kanye West's 2007 single Flashing Lights and it was a top 30 hit. But Dwele had no illusions about his own music. Since leaving Virgin, he has recorded for small labels like eOne and he owns the masters. His brand was never going to appeal to a mass audience so he might as well own the recordings. Dwele last released an album in 2012. He still appears as a guest artist on a couple of Big Sean albums. He also DJs in Detroit clubs and performs life. Neo Soul was never a big market anyway. Here's the video for Find a Way by Dwele.
