Jason "Jelly Roll" DeFord started out as a rapper. But he has recently had several top ten country hits led by the 2022 single Need a Favor. His music is country rock so he could cross over to pop. DeFord has been recording for over a decade. His recent success is because he is on a major label. He was born Dec. 4, 1984 in Antioch, TN which is a Nashville suburb. As a teen, DeFord landed in jail for drug possession and aggravated robbery. Then he started rapping inspired by Three 6 Mafia. He started doing mixtapes in 2003. He was a member of the hip hop group SNO. He released many mixtapes and collaborated with Struggle Jennings, Haystak and Tech N9ne. These were mostly self released and DeFord has said that music is therapeutic for him. He finally started to make progress when the 2022 single Dead Man Walking topped the Alternative Rock chart. This got DeFord a record deal with BBR Music Group for the 2023 album Whitsitt Chapel. The single Need a Favor reached #3 on the Country Singles chart and #13 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album was certified Gold. DeFord wrote all the songs with co-writers. Zach Crowell was the main producer. He has worked with Dustin Lynch among others. Need a Favor was the exception. Austin Nivarel produced and wrote the song with DeFord and Joe and Robert Ragosta of the band Patent Pending. Since then Deford has been a fixture on the country charts. He won Best New Artist on the 2023 CMA Awards. For the 2024 album Beautifully Broken, DeFord moved to the much larger Republic label. It was released a couple of weeks ago.
