Artist:Altar Boys
Song:Forever Mercy
Album:The Collection
The Altar Boys started out in the early 80s as a punk influenced CCM band. By the time they released their 1989 album Forever Mercy, they were a standard hard rock band. I don't know if there has ever been a successful punk influenced CCM band which may explain why Altar Boys changed their sound and appearance. The Altar Boys were formed in 1982 in Los Angeles. The lead singer, guitarist and main songwriter was Mike Stand. Other members were Steve Pannier on guitar, Ric Alba on bass and Jeff Crandall on drums. As I said, they sounded like The Ramones and they had the punk sound when they released their first couple of albums. Then they signed with Degarmo & Key's Frontline label and they got Altar Boys to change to a more mainstream rock sound. For most of their run, Altar Boys wrote and produced themselves. Stand wrote most of the songs. For the 1989 album Forever Mercy, Frontline brought in Steve Griffith of the CCM band Vector to produce. Vector was also on Frontline. After they toured to support the album, Alba left Altar Boys and they went on an indefinite hiatus in 1992. You can get all their hits on this comp. Altar Boys have reunited a couple of times, most recently in 2018. It looks like Stand owns the Altar Boys recordings so that keeps him busy. Here's the video for Forever Mercy by Altar Boys.
