AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Shelly West

Artist:Shelly West

Song:Jose Cuervo

Album:Country Shots: Barroom Biggies

Though she is mainly known for her duets with David Frizzell, Shelly West topped the country charts as a solo artist in 1983 with Jose Cuervo. She was born May 23, 1958 in Cleveland the daughter of country music legend Dottie West. Shelly was 17 when she started touring with her mom. After she married her mom's guitarist Allen Frizzell, they moved to California and she started performing with Frizzell's brother David Frizzell. Veteran producer Snuff Garrett got them a record deal with Casablanca. But the company was sold to PolyGram and he took them to Clint Eastwood who was starting his Viva label. You're the Reason God Made Oklahoma topped the country charts in 1981. Frizzell and West recorded three albums and scored four top ten country hits. The duo ended because Shelly divorced her husband. Garrett took Shelly into the studio and recorded the 1983 album West by West. Jose Cuervo topped the Country Singles chart. Cindy Jordan wrote and recorded the song in 1981. Obviously it's a drinking song and the Jose Cuervo tequila got a big sales bump when the song was a hit. Shelly's other top ten country hit was Flight 309 from Tennessee. After three albums, Shelly remarried and had twin sons. She returned to touring with her mom until Dottie West died in a 1991 car accident. Shelly retired after that. You can get Jose Cuervo on this Rhino various artists budget CD of drinking songs. Shelly returned briefly to appear with Frizzell on the RFD-TV series Country Family Reunion. But she hasn't recorded since the 80s. Here's Shelly West performing Jose Cuervo on Nashville Now Oct. 31, 1986. You'll notice everyone is dressed up for Halloween.
