Artist:Neko Case
Song:Deep Red Bells
Album:Blacklisted
It would be easy to categorize Neko Case as the current darling of the alt country scene. But her music is much more complex than that. She draws from all kinds of influences and just uses country music as a launching point. Her sound is very sophisticated. She was born Sept. 8, 1970 in Alexandria, VA. She was an Air Force brat but grew up mostly in Tacoma, WA and she considers that her home town. In 1994, she moved to Vancouver, BC to attend art school and started playing in local bands like Maow and The Weasels. Eventually she started Neko Case and Her Boyfriends and released her debut CD in 1997. Neko graduated in 1998 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Her student visa ran out so she moved to Seattle. While working on her next solo CD, she worked with The New Pornographers, The Sadies and The Corn Sisters. Her 2000 CD Furnace Room Lullaby set the stage for future releases with the emphasis on country music but also containing other elements like jazz and blues. She then moved to Chicago. Deep Red Balls is from her 2002 CD Blacklisted. Apparently she was banned from the Grand Ole Opry for removing her shirt during a performance. Neko says she was suffering from heat stroke. Though it seems unlikely that Neko will ever be a mainstream recording artist, Blacklisted generated a lot of buzz including Neko being voted the Sexiest Babe Of Indie Rock in a 2003 Playboy poll. She turned down their request to pose nude. She also continued to record with The New Pornographers and The Sadies. I met Neko Case at the 2004 world premiere of the women's wrestling documentary Lipstick & Dynamite. She composed the music and is related to women's wrestling legend Ella Waldek. She's a real fan and I told her where she could get videos of Ella Waldek. Neko Case currently records for Anti Records and her latest CD Middle Cyclone was released Mar. 2009. She is a tremendous singer and songwriter and if you're not familiar with her, you need to check her out. Here's Neko Case performing Deep Red Balls on Austin City Limits 2006.
