Jango Song Of The Day-Tracey Ullman

Artist:Tracey Ullman
Song:They Don't Know
Album:The Best Of Tracey Ullman

Most folks will be familiar with Tracey Ullman for her award winning comedy TV series on Fox, HBO and Showtime. But you may not be aware that she had a brief music career prior to that highlighted by her 1983 top ten hit They Don't Know. She was born Dec. 30, 1959 in Berkshire, England and by her teen years she was appearing in musical theatre in London's West End. Singer songwriter Kristy MacColl wrote They Don't Know and had already recorded it in 1979 on Stiff Records. Kristy was the daughter of British folk music legend Ewan MacColl. Tracey signed with Stiff in 1983 and producer Peter Collins brought Kristy in to help with the album. The album You Broke My Heart In 17 Places was a mix of original songs and covers performed by Tracey in a retro 60s girl group style. You Don't Know reached #8 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was helped when Paul McCartney appeared in the video. Tracey appeared in McCartney's film Give My regards To Broad Street. Her second album didn't do as well and by 1986, she quit the music business and moved to the US and the rest is history. This Rhino comp covers Tracey's brief music career. I like Tracey's tongue in cheek delivery of the songs. But I think the original material works better than her covers. Tracey Ullman continues to produce TV today and has never returned to recording music. Here's the video for You Don't Know by Tracey Ullman.
