Artist:Nick Lowe
Song:So It Goes
Album:Quiet Please: The New Best Of Nick Lowe
Though for the most part commercial success has eluded Nick Lowe, he is one of the most important figures in pop music in the latter part of the 20th century as a performer, songwriter and producer. He was born Mar. 25, 1949 in Woodchurch, Suffolk, England. The son of a British Royal Air Force officer, he spent part of his childhood in the Middle East before settling in Kent. In 1965 he started working with Brinsley Schwarz and they started Kippington Lodge. They signed with Parlophone without much success and became Brinsley Schwarz in 1969 and signed with United Artists. UA's publicity stunts to try to promote the band backfired but eventually they gained respect with their simple brand of pub rock. By the time they split in 1975, Lowe was already producing artists like Graham Parker and Dr. Feelgood. UA wouldn't let him out of his contract. So he deliberately produced a bad album by The Disco Brothers and they dropped him. Then Lowe signed with Jake Rivera's new Stiff label and would help them become an important force in New Wave music. So It Goes was his first single for Stiff. But he also produced albums for Elvis Costello and The Damned. Then he got together with Dave Edmunds to form Rockpile and have his biggest commercial success with Teacher Teacher. Through all this, he married Johnny Cash's step daughter Carlene Carter and produced her albums. Rockpile split in 1980. Lowe continued to produce his own music and was also part of the super group Little Village. Nick Lowe is currently recording for Yep Roc. They recently released this 2CD overview of Lowe's career. It is also available with a DVD of a Nick Lowe concert and all his videos. Be sure to check it out. Here's Nick Lowe and Rockpile performing So It Goes on the Kenny Everett Video Show 1978.
