Here's the match video of Randa Markos vs Marina Rodriguez from last night's UFC show in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Randa clearly has the physical tools to be an elite fighter. But she makes too many mistakes and she is now seeing a sports psychologist to help her with her mentality. This fight is a microcosm of her UFC career. Marina won a UFC contract on the Brazilian edition of Dana White's Contender Series. She's mainly a striker. So Randa's strategy should be to take her down and submit her. But things go south for Randa after round one. Randa gets away with the dreaded head and arm takedown to get top position. For the most part, she stays on top and lands some ground and pound. Two of the judges and many fans scored it 10-8 for Randa. I didn't think Randa was dominant enough to get a 10-8 so I scored it 10-9 and so did the third judge. Round two was much closer. Much of the round was standing and Marina is much better on her feet. And Randa tried another head and arm takedown. But it didn't work this time so she gave up her back. The round was very close and I scored it 10-9 for Randa and so did one of the judges. But the other two scored it 10-9 for Marina. Round three was more clear cut. I think everyone scored it 10-9 for Marina. So I scored it 29-28 for Randa. One judge scored it the same. But because the other two judges scored round one 10-8 for Randa, the scores were 28-28. That's a majority draw. Randa again cost herself a win with mistakes. And I don't think Marina is an elite fighter either. For a change when neither fighter deserved to win, we got a draw.
