Artist:Club Nouveau
Song:Lean On Me
Album:Life, Love & Pain
This hip hop cover of the Bill Withers classic Lean On Me topped the charts in 1986. It was the only big hit for Club Nouveau. They emerged from the ashes of Timex Social Club. After Rumors was a top ten hit, Timex Social Club split up and Jay King and Denzil Foster formed Club Nouveau with Thomas McElroy, Valerie Watson and Samuelle Prater. Their debut single Jealousy was about the Timex Social Club split. They signed with Warner Bros. and the album Life, Love & Pain was released in 1986. Most of the songs were written and produced by King, Foster and McElroy. Lean On Me was the only cover. Prater was lead singer. Lean On Me topped the charts and Life, Love & Pain was certified Platinum. The album is available on CD. Beware of re-recorded versions of Lean On Me. Why You Treat Me So Bad charted but Lean On Me was their only big hit. Club Nouveau released three albums on Warners. Then Foster and McElroy left. They recorded an album but they are best known for producing En Vogue. Club Nouveau continued with King, Watson and Prater. King has had his own production company for years. I'm not sure if they are still around. They were still touring at the end of 2016. But King hasn't posted anything on Facebook lately. Their website is up but it doesn't appear to be active. Maybe Club Nouveau retired. Here's the video for Lean On Me by Club Nouveau.
