AccuRadio Song Of The Day-The Earls

Artist:The Earls

Song:Remember Then

Album:Hy Weiss Presents Old Town Records

Here's a 1962 doo wop classic that is still a staple of oldies radio. It was the only chart single by The Earls. The leader of The Earls was Larry Chance. He grew up in Philadelphia and attended high school with Chubby Checker and Frankie Avalon. Chance and his family moved to The Bronx in 1957. He formed The Hi-Hatters with Bob Del Din, Eddie Harder and John Wray. They changed their name to The Earls and released the 1961 single Life Is But a Dream on Rome Records. They performed with DJ Murray the K and appeared on American Bandstand. The Earls switched to Old Town Records owned by record distributor Hy Weiss. There's a Moon Out Tonight by The Capris was on Old Town. Though he wasn't credited, it looks like they worked with producer Stan Vincent. He went on to be a Buddah Records house producer. Remember Then was the first single. It reached #24 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was written by Brill Building songwriters Tony Powers and Beverly Ross. Vincent also got a songwriting credit for coming up with the chorus which is the main reason the song is memorable. This was The Earls only chart single. They recorded for Old Town until the label closed in 1966. This 2CD budget comp from Ace Records is an overview of Old Town. The Earls recorded for ABC, Columbia and Cotillion. And Chance led a version of The Earls on the oldies circuit for many years. Larry Chance died on Sept. 6, 2023 at age 82. Here's a video for Remember Then by The Earls.
