Artist:The Chieftains f/The Corrs
Song:I Know My Love
Album:The Wide World Over
In the 60 year history of The Chieftains, this 1999 single was their biggest chart hit. The success of this was probably because The Corrs were popular at the time and MTV played the video. I don't think MTV cared about The Chieftains. Paddy Moloney, Sean Potts and Michael Turbidy started The Chieftains in 1962. Moloney was the leader and producer. Obviously their base is traditional Irish folk music but they recorded all kinds of music with all kinds of people. That allowed them to have a larger fanbase than most Irish folk groups. The Chieftains first became famous in the US when they worked on the score of Stanley Kubrick's 1975 film Barry Lyndon. They were on Island Records at the time. They moved to RCA in 1987 and released the album In Ireland with Irish classical flutist James Galway followed by the 1988 album Irish Heartbeat with Van Morrison. These albums did so well that The Chieftains and RCA thought that maybe they could do an album of songs with various artists. That resulted in the 1995 album The Long Black Veil featuring the hit single Have I Told You Lately featuring Van Morrison. Others appearing included Sting, Mick Jagger, Sinead O'Connor, Mark Knopfler and Ry Cooder. The album was certified Gold. The 1999 album Tears of Stone was a sequel to that album but featuring all women. I Know My Love is a traditional song that Burl Ives recorded in 1941. The Chieftains recorded it with The Corrs on the sessions for The Corrs 1997 album Talk On Corners. But it doesn't appear on that album. The Corrs were popular on MTV at the time. So that sold the album. Others who appeared on the album included Bonnie Raitt, Joni Mitchell, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Diana Krall. Tears of Stone is available on CD. But you can get I Know My Love on this Chieftains comp or a Corrs comp. The Chieftains continued to record and perform until Paddy Moloney died in 2021 and they retired. Here's the video for I Know My Love by The Chieftains featuring The Corrs.
