Artist:The Quik
Song:Bert's Apple Crumble
Album:The Mod Scene
Here's a B side of an obscure 1967 single recorded by an even more obscure band that was unearthed in the 90s by London DJs. Bert's Apple Crumble is a pretty good slice of Booker T & The MGs influenced instrumental soul that probably went over well with the Acid Jazz crowd. So who were The Quik? They appear to be part of a long series of failed bands starting with The Soul Agents from Hampshire, England. They recorded a 1964 EP for Pye Records. Most of the band went on to back up Rod Stewart. Drummer Pete Hunt joined The meddyEVILS where he met organist Alex Chamberlain and bassist John Roberts. This band split up after two singles. And then The Quik was formed. The band was Alex Chamberlain on organ, John Rennie on sax, Bruce Roberts on guitar, John Roberts on bass and Pete Hunt on drums. The Quik recorded three 1967 singles for London's Deram label. Love Is a Beautiful Thing was the first single. Bert's Apple Crumble was the B side. It was written and produced by Dave Hadfield who went on to produce Manfred Mann's Earth Band in the 70s. The Quik split up after three singles. But Bert's Apple Crumble was unearthed in the 90s by DJs and it became a cause celebre on the Acid Jazz scene. You can get Bert's Apple Crumble on this various artists comp of obscure songs. After an unsuccessful attempt to reform The meddyEVILS, Hunt and Bruce Roberts were in the funk band Iguana who recorded a 1971 album for Polydor. They went on to back up Jess Roden who recorded a few albums for Island in the 70s. Here's a video for Bert's Apple Crumble by The Quik.
