Michael Cerveris is a Tony winning Broadway actor. He was Tony nominated for playing the title role of the 2005 revival of the Stephen Sondheim musical Sweeney Todd. Recently he has been doing a lot of TV. He was born Nov. 6, 1960 in Bethesda, MD. but he grew up in Huntington, WV. His mother was a dancer and his father was a professor of music. Cerveris graduated from Yale in 1983. He majored in theater studies. He appeared mostly in off Broadway shows until he played John Wilkes Booth in the 2004 musical Assassins. He won a Tony for that. And no doubt that got Cerveris the starring role in the 2005 revival of Sweeney Todd. This was based on John Doyle's 2004 London revival where the actors play their own instruments. Cerveris got another Tony nomination. The show ran for about a year so it was successful. Mark Jacoby played Turpin in Sweeney Todd. He has done supporting roles on Broadway. Cerveris continued to perform on Broadway. He won another Tony for the 2015 show Fun Home. That is his most recent Broadway appearance. Cerveris played Elihas Starr in the 2018 film Ant-Man and the Wasp. He makes regular TV guest shots. He had recurring roles on Fringe, Treme and The Good Wife. His most recent appearance was on the new HBO series The Gilded Age. He will return for season two.
