AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Trick Pony

Artist:Trick Pony
Song:Pour Me
Album:Trick Pony

Trick Pony had success on the country charts with their 2001 debut album and four top twenty singles. But it didn't last and they only recorded three albums before splitting up. They were formed in 1996. Guitarist Keith Burns and bassist Ira Dean were working as sideman. Burns was working for Joe Diffie. Dean was working for Tanya Tucker. They decided to form a group with singer Heidi Newfield. She was a friend of Burns' wife. The name Trick Pony is from the 1980 Paul Simon album One Trick Pony. The music is country with Southern Rock leanings. They signed with Warner Bros. and Pour Me was released in advance of the 2001 album Trick Pony. Pour Me reached #12 on the Country Singles chart. After the album was released, On A Night Like This reached #4 on the Country singles chart. The album was certified Gold. The album was produced by Chuck Howard who had success producing Billy Dean and John Berry. Burns and Dean wrote most of the songs on the album. There was a cover of the Johnny Cash song Big River featuring Cash and Waylon Jennings. Trick Pony's 2002 album On A Mission didn't do as well. After Just What I Do was a top twenty hit, Warners dropped them. They signed with Asylum-Curb for the 2004 album R.I.D.E. And then Heidi left to go solo. She released an album on Curb in 2006. She was replaced by Aubrey Collins who appeared on the ABC series One: Making of a Music Star. But she left after a few months and Trick Pony split up. Burns formed Burns & Poe with former DreamWorks recording artist Michelle Poe. They released an album in 2011. Dean had success as a songwriter and he did sign a record deal. But it doesn't look like he ever recorded an album. Trick Pony reformed and announced plans to tour and record in 2014. But that was derailed when Dean left shortly after the announcement. Trick Pony did release an EP in 2016. They don't seem to be active now. Here's the video for Pour Me by Trick Pony.

  1. I saw that video and I liked the music and the big, green Bull Fiddle being played. Thought that was a hoot. Good video and music from them.
