AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Indigo Girls

Artist:Indigo Girls
Song:Closer To Fine
Album:Retrospective

Indigo Girls rode the neo folk movement of the 90s to have a long run of best selling CDs. Closer To Fine was their highest charting single in 1989 but they were more of an album group and they didn't need a hit single to sell CDs. Amy Ray and Emily Saliers grew in the suburbs of Atlanta. They knew each other in elementary school but started performing together in high school first as The B-Band and then Saliers and Ray. After both attempted to attend college away from home separately, they both landed at Emory University in Atlanta. In 1985, they started performing as Indigo Girls. The name came from a dictionary search. They released an album independently in 1987 and this resulted in a deal with Epic Records. Indigo Girls was their debut CD in 1989. Boosted by a guest appearance by R.E.M. leader Michael Stipe, the CD reached #22 on the Billboard Hot 200. Closer To Fine reached #52 on the Billboard Hot 100. Saliers wrote the song and the 60s influence that has always been part of the Indigo Girls music is obvious in this song. They won a Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album. They were also nominated for Best New Artist but lost to...ahem...Milli Vanilli. Indigo Girls' success continued through the 90s. They started to decline around 2000 and that's when Epic released this budget comp. They left Epic for Hollywood Records in 2004 but they only recorded one CD for Hollywood and they now have their own label distributed by Vanguard Records. That label is a better fit for them. Their latest CD Beauty Queen Sister was released Oct. 4, 2011. Here's the video for Closer To Fine by Indigo Girls.
