Tonight I am going to the EnWave Theatre at Harbourfront to see Melody Gardot in concert. Her path to stardom is one of the most remarkable in recent memory. She was born in New Jersey in 1985 but grew up in Philadelphia singing in nightclubs. While studying fashion design at the Community College of Philadelphia in 2004, a hit and run driver made an illegal turn and left Melody for dead. She suffered a broken pelvis and head injuries including memory loss. She was in a hospital bed for a year. The memory loss forced her to re-learn simple tasks. During her recovery, she started writing songs and the subsequent recordings were posted on MySpace and she released her CD Worrisome Heart in 2006. Verve Records signed her up and released the CD in 2007. Her latest CD My One And Only Thrill was produced by Joni Mitchell's longtime producer Larry Klein. It reached #2 on the Billboard Top Jazz Albums chart, #42 on the Billboard Hot 200 and charted worldwide. Melody is sensitive to light so she must wear sunglasses on stage. She also sits on a special seat that emits electronic impulses for her pain. And she has to walk with a cane. Of course I will review the concert tomorrow. Here's a profile of Melody Gardot aired on CBS Sunday Morning in Jan.
