Riders In The Sky is a very entertaining mix of cowboy music and humour. They've been around since the 70s keeping the music of Gene Autry alive. But they have also recorded highly acclaimed children's music and contributed to Toy Story 2 and other Pixar films. The three original members are Ranger Doug (born Doug Green Mar. 20, 1946 in Great Lakes Naval Base, IL), Woody Paul (born Paul Chrisman Aug. 23, 1949 in Nashville) & Too Slim (born Fred LaBour June 3, 1948 in Grand Rapids, MI). Accordianist Cowpolka King Joey Miskulin was added in the mid 90s. Doug played with Bill Monroe and was a country music journalist. Paul played fiddle for Loggins & Messina. Too Slim was in Dickey Lee's band. The three started hanging around together in Nashville clubs and this led to a regular TV gig on The Nashville Network's Tumbleweed Theater. Their mix of corny humour and love of cowboy songs earned them a contract with Rounder Records in 1979. Their shtick hasn't changed much over the years but they have appeared a lot on National Public Radio and have become very popular children's entertainers. This comp is a good intro to their earlier Rounder recordings. They also worked on Toy Story 2 and won a Grammy for the 2001 CD Woody's Roundup. Here's the video for Woody's Roundup by Riders In The Sky.
