Artist:Raheem DeVaughn
Song:Woman
Album:Love Behind The Melody
R & B singer songwriter Raheem DeVaughn calls himself "The R & B Hippie Neo-Soul Rock Star". I'm not sure what that means but the kid has talent. He was born in Newark, NJ and is the son of jazz cellist Abdul Wadud. He grew up with his mom in Maryland. He started performing in Washington, DC clubs and got the attention of Dru Hill manager Jerry Vines. This led him to veteran producers DJ Jazzy Jeff & Kenny Burns and DeVaughn signed with Jive Records in 2002. His 2005 debut CD The Love Experience did very well on the R & B charts and the 2008 follow up Love Behind The Melody has reached #1 on the R & B charts and #5 on the Billboard Hot 200. DeVaughn writes a lot of his own material and co-wrote and produced Woman with veteran producer Chucky Thompson. I guess the song is a tribute to the women in his life especially his mom. The song earned him a Grammy nomination for Best R & B Performance Male. The follow up single Customer is headed up the charts right now. The idea behind Love Behind The Melody was to make a more commercial CD but not alienate his established fanbase. That can be a very fine line and it appears to have succeeded. Raheem DeVaughn has a lot of talent and looks to have a long career ahead of him. Here's the video for Woman by Raheem DeVaughn.
