Yahoo LAUNCHCAST Song Of The Day-John Coltrane

Artist:John Coltrane

Song:Brasilia

Album:Complete 1961 Village Vanguard Recordings

This 4CD box set is a must for John Coltrane fans. For years they were available in bits and pieces but in 1997, MCA released this box set as a public service to Coltrane fans. If you already have the Classic Coltrane Quartet box set, none of this is on that box set. These recordings were done at the Village Vanguard club in New York Nov. 1-5, 1961. I guess the idea was that Coltrane had just joined the fledgling Impulse label and recording everything would give the label the opportunity to spread the music to numerous releases. And that's what they did. This has the classic quartet with John Coltrane on sax, McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass & Elvin Jones on drums. Add Eric Dolphy on sax along with Ahmed Abdul-Malik on oud and Reggie Workman filling in on bass and Roy Haynes filling in on drums on some tracks. Originally, there were four albums released; Impressions, Live At The Village Vanguard, The Other Village Vanguard Tapes & Trane's Modes. A more recent release was From The Original Master Tapes. This box set contains everything Bob Thiele recorded for intended release. It's amazing music as Coltrane was still exploring his options regarding the "Classic Quartet". There are multiple performances of some songs but this is fascinating music by anyone's standard. Here's John Coltrane performing Impressions with Eric Dolphy, McCoy Tyner, Reggie Workman & Elvin Jones in Germany 1961.
