Womens MMA updates from Japan

DEEP had a press conference yesterday and Smackgirl made an announcement yesterday. Both were updating upcoming shows. Also some sad news from Wednesday's Pancrase match. DEEP announced the brackets for the Feb. 22 Flyweight one day tournament at Korakuen Hall. Satoko Shinashi will face Fukuko Hamada and SACHI will face Kayo Nagayasu. Of course the winners face each other in the final. It doesn't change anything. Shinashi is the clear favourite to win this tournament.

SMACKGIRL announced additions to the World REMIX tournamrnt that will begin Feb. 14 at Korakuen Hall. Korean fighter Su Hi Ham has been added to the Lightweight tournament. Ham got everyone's attention with her upset win over Hisae Watanabe last February. Her record is 2-2 and she lost to Yuka Tsuji at the Dec. 26 Smackgirl show. I don't think this changes anything. Megumi Fujii is still the favourite. They also added veterans Megumi Yabushita & Tama Chan to the Open Weight tournament. Of course Yabushita is a legend of martial arts in Japan and her 13-13 record doesn't tell the whole story. She won the 2004 World REMIX tournament by DQ. Tama Chan has also been added. Her record is 16-13. I understand Lana Stafanac was invited but is injured.

In the aftermath of Wednesday's Pancrase show, it appears that the soccer kick that WINDY Tomomi used to finish off Emi Tomimatsu damaged her intestines. Tomimatsu was taken to the hospital after the match and underwent an operation for peritonitis yesterday. Hopefully she will recover completely but I don't expect to see her in the ring again. Her father posted on his blog that he tried to get Emi to pull out as he didn't think she was ready to fight Tomomi. And I wasn't surprised by the lopsided result. This gives some people the opportunity to place blame and there really is no one to blame. It's a fight. Sometimes people get hurt. Tomimatsu wanted to establish herself in MMA and her father's advice probably made her want to prove herself even more. The injury is unfortunate but it is part of the MMA business.
