Sara Schneider upsets Kaitlin Young in Las Vegas

The result of the marquee womens match at last night's BodogFight show in Las Vegas goes to show that anything can happen and no fighter should ever be underestimated. Rising 135lb. star Kaitlin Young is poised to make a big splash after winning three matches convincingly at November's Hook 'N' Shoot show. This week she also signed with EliteXC. Her original opponent dropped out. So the promoters brought in a fighter named Sara Schneider. At 1-0, Sara might seem inexperienced. But she has been an instructor for several years at the dojo she runs with her husband in Kansas City. And her only pro fight was for a promotion in Kansas City. So obviously she's not really a pro fighter per se and may have agreed to do this fight as a favour at the last minute.

Round one begins with the fighters feeling each other out. Schneider gets a takedown but is unable to hook an armbar and Young escapes. Young nails Schneider with a kick to the head and a right hook. Schneider got another takedown but Young landed more strikes as the round ended. Young began round two by knocking Schneider down with a straight left. Young went in for the kill with ground strikes but she left herself open for an armbar and Schneider hooked it for the submission at 35 seconds of round two. Oops. These things happen. It's not the end of the world. The other fight was a 120lb. match. Angela Magana raised her record to 3-1 by defeating Lynn Alvarez with an armbar at 1:25 of round two. Similarly, this fight was fairly even until Alvarez left an opening and Magana took advantage. The moral of the story is sometimes a fighter needs a loss to make her better in the future. We'll see if that happens to Kaitlin Young.

  1. You are obviously biased towards Young, "Oops"?! You make it sound like Schneider won that fight by accident. Young has known about this fight since November, Schneider had 2 weeks to prepare. Schneider took some hard shots and was still able to beat her, not crumple to the floor or give up like some other fighters we know. Maybe you should be singing Schneider's praises instead of making excuses for Young!

  2. Give her credit for winning but most would characterize it as an upset. And she was losing when Young gave her an opening. It may not matter in the long run if Sara Schneider doesn't want a more prominent position in the MMA business. You can be sure there will be a rematch.
