Sian Phillips is a versatile Welsh actress who has had a long career in films and TV mostly in England. The 1980 London revival of Pal Joey was not only her first appearance in a stage musical but it looks to be her first time singing in public. She was born May 14, 1933 in Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen, Glamorgan, Wales. She began performing professionally at age 11 on BBC Radio in Wales. In the 50s she was a member of the BBC Repertory Company and the National Theater Company. She starred in the BBC's 1959 broadcast of Siwan: The King's Daughter. Her co-star was Peter O'Toole and they were married from 1959-79. They have two daughters. Sian made her first film appearance in 1962. Her films include Becket (1964), Goodbye, Mr. Chips (1969) and Murphy's War (1971). Those films all starred Peter O'Toole. On TV, her most notable role was in the 1976 BBC production of I. Claudius which aired in the US on PBS. Then in 1980 she played Vera in the London revival of the musical Pal Joey co-starring Denis Lawson. This ran for about a year. The original cast album is available but this highlights album is available as a budget CD. Sian has continued to appear in films like Nijinsky (1980), Clash of the Titans (1981), Dune (1984) and Ewoks: The Battle for Endor (1985). Most of her TV appearances have been TV movies or guest shots on British TV shows. After Pal Joey, Sian continued to appear on stage in London's West End. Her most notable role was as Marlene Dietrich in the biographical musical Marlene. She appeared in the West End production and then the 1999 Broadway production. Sian was nominated for a Tony. That's probably the highlight of her career. Sian has her own one woman show. And she still appears on stage, screen and TV. Here's Sian Phillips performing Bewitched Bothered and Bewildered 1980.
