If you're looking for a jazz Christmas album, this one by legendary pianist Ellis Marsalis could be perfect. Of course Marsalis is the father of the Marsalis brothers, Wynton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, Delfeayo Marsalis and Jason Marsalis. Ellis Marsalis is best known in New Orleans as a teacher. He not only taught his sons but Harry Connick Jr. and Nicholas Payton are among his students. Marsalis has been recording as a leader since the 80s when his sons got him a record deal at Columbia. He contributed a song to the 1991 various artists album A Jazzy Wonderland. In recent years he has recorded on his own Elm label. A New Orleans Christmas Carol was released in 2011. It's mostly jazz versions of Christmas standards like We Three Kings of Orient Are. Musicians are Roman Skakun on vibes, Bill Huntington on bass and Jason Marsalis on drums. I'm not familiar with Skakun. But Huntington and Jason Marsalis have been on several Ellis Marsalis albums. So jazz fans looking for Christmas music should check it out.
