This Is How We Do It was one of the biggest hits of 1995. It topped the Billboard Hot 100 for seven weeks and also topped the R & B Singles chart. It was Montell Jordan's biggest hit though he had other hits and wrote hits for others. He left secular music in 2008 and is a worship leader at a ministry in Atlanta. He was born Montell Du'Sean Barnett Dec. 3, 1968 in Los Angeles. He grew up singing in church and sang in clubs while earning a communications degree at Pepperdine University. He got the record deal he was looking for when he met PMP Records president Paul Stewart. Stewart took Jordan to New York to sing for Def Jam Records president Russell Simmons and signed a contract. This Is How We Do It was his 1995 debut album. It reached #12 on the Billboard Hot 200 and was certified Platinum. The single topped the Billboard Hot 100 for seven weeks and became a huge party anthem. The song is based on the 1989 hit Children's Story by rapper Slick Rick which is in turn based on jazz pianist Bob James' 1974 song Nautilus, a song frequently sampled by hip hop guys. Jordan wrote and produced This Is How We Do It with sax player Oji Pierce who worked with other Def Jam artists at the time. The song was also Def Jam's first number one pop hit. Jordan had top five hits with Let's Ride in 1998 and Get It On Tonite in 1999. And he wrote the hits Nobody's Supposed To Be Here for Deborah Cox and Incomplete for Sisqo. So he had a good run. Unfortunately, Universal has not released a Montell Jordan comp but the original album is still available and you can get it on plenty of various artists CDs. Jordan left Def Jam in 2002 and after recording for Koch and Fontana, he quit secular music and went to work as a worship leader for Victory World Church in Norcross, GA. He still performs there and released a song on iTunes last year. You may recall hearing This Is How We Do It as the theme for the Howie Mandel hidden camera show Howie Do It. So this song has made Montell Jordan a lot of money. He has been married since 1994 and his wife is expecting their fourth child this month.
