Artist:The Mountain Goats
Song:Estate Sale Sign
Album:All Eternals Deck
For years John Darnielle released solo CDs under The Mountain Goats name. In recent years, they have become more of a band for touring. Darnielle has a loyal fanbase for his enigmatic songs. He was born Mar. 16, 1967 in Bloomington, IN and grew up in San Luis Obispo, CA. After high school, he lived and worked at the Metropolitan State Hospital in Norwalk, CA and practiced music in his spare time. While earning a degree in English at Pitzer College, he started recording his music on cassette using a boombox and started using The Mountain Goats name in 1991. The group name is a reference to the Screamin' Jay Hawkins song Yellow Coat. Through the 90s, Darnielle released a lot of music. He occasionally brought in musicians when her wanted to perform live. But the recordings were solo. He's not the only solo artist who hides behind a group name. He has also released recordings under other names like The Extra Glenns. He has never released a recording as John Darnielle. He worked with Franklin Bruno in The Extra Glenns and Bruno started collaborating with Darnielle on Mountain Goats recordings in 2002. Bassist Peter Hughes joined and that was the studio band. He adds musicians for live shows. Superchunk drummer Jon Wurster joined The Mountain Goats in 2007. For The Mountain Goats latest CD All Eternals Deck, Darnielle signed with Merge Records. He had recorded for 4AD for several years. The album title and concept is based on fictional tarot cards. Darnielle's music is pretty good but I think his fans really enjoy trying to figure out his deliberately enigmatic lyrics. So if that's something you like to do, you might enjoy The Mountain Goats. A new CD Transcendental Youth is scheduled for a 2012 release. Here's the video for Estate Sale Sign by The Mountain Goats.
