Kyra Gracie with stike trainer Claudinho Coelho |
The last couple of days there have been reports that Brazilian jiu jitsu legend Kyra Gracie is in talks to make her pro MMA debut with Strikeforce. After some digging, I have learned that Kyra told Graciemag International that she is in talks with One FC in Singapore. Kyra will be part of the ADCC tournament in September so if she were to make her MMA debut, it would likely happen in November. So is Kyra talking to Strikeforce? Of course she is. She's talked to them before. Kyra has announced plans to turn pro several times and has always changed her mind. So until she is in a cage facing an opponent, excuse my skepticism. So what's the deal with One FC? You may recall they tried to sign Cris Cyborg. Obviously Zuffa learned that they were talking with Kyra. And of course Zuffa can throw enough money at Kyra to crush One FC. A couple of Gracies have already signed with One FC but none of them are Kyra. My experience with promotions based in places like Singapore, China and Korea is even if they have money, they can't get top fighters. The promotion owners tend to be flaky money marks. When the promotion isn't as successful as hoped, the owner pulls out and it's over. I don't know if that will happen with One FC but that's the pattern I am familiar with. There's no question that Kyra Gracie would be a considerable credit to women's MMA regardless of where she fights. She has that Gracie pedigree and proven jiu jitsu skills. She was actually training her cousin Strikeforce fighter Roger Gracie a few months ago. She is also very well spoken and speaks perfect English. And she looks great in a bikini. If Kyra Gracie turns pro, I expect it to be with Strikeforce. But I am not convinced that she will turn pro.
