Today on Big Bad Blog Video Theater I have for you last night's match with Julia Budd vs Germaine De Randamie from the Strikeforce show in Kent, WA. Both of these fighters are Muay Thai fighters transitioning to MMA. Germaine is the more accomplished striker. As we saw in her win over Shana Olsen, Julia has the strength to take down any fighter. But I don't think she's too sure what to do when she is on top of her opponent. So Julia's strategy was to take Germaine down and then hope the ref doesn't break them up for lack of action. That's known as lay and pray. It exposed Germaine's takedown defence as inadequate. It was funny because when Julia tried to pound Germaine, Germaine just fired back from her back. Then Julia tried for an armbar that could have got her into real trouble. Germaine's guillotine attempts immediately after she was taken down just showed how inexperienced she is on the ground. She needed to try and get out from under immediately instead of waiting as long as she did to try and do that. She used up way to much energy ineffectively. The first round lost her the fight because she did better in the second round and won the third round. The judges scored it 29-28 for Julia which I think was the correct decision. Both of them need work and it's doubtful that either of them could handle Ronda Rousey's quickness. Enjoy the video!
